Research Areas:

Rhetoric and Composition, Margaret Atwood, Science Fiction/Fantasy, The Simpsons, Humor and Satire, Stand-Up, Narrative Medicine, Shakespeare, Drama, Popular Culture, Graphic Novels, 20th and 21st C Anglophone Literature Dr. Karma has specialized training in theatre, film, feminist theory, and anti-racist pedagogy, in addition to professional certification in online teaching.

Teaching Areas:

In the UWP, Dr. Karma's classes include 48, 101, 102D, 102J, 102L, 104F, and 104J. Some of her Freshman Seminars are "The Simpsons: Satire and Postmodernism," "Writing and Performing Stand-Up Comedy," "Margaret Atwood: Handmaids, Convicts, and Pigoons, Oh My" and "Doctor Who: A Companion's Guide." She also teaches a graduate course on writing in forensic science and a summer abroad course: Oxford on Film.

Biography:

Karma Waltonen has been teaching at UC Davis since 2000. The editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal Margaret Atwood Studies, Dr. Karma (as her students call her) has a wide variety of interests, most of which are incredibly nerdy/geeky. For example, she has two books on The Simpsons, both co-authored with Denise Du Vernay. Recently, she has published on time travel in Star Trek and on the ethics of religious cults in Doctor Who and on asexuality in Sherlock and on postmodernism in The X-Files. She and Melissa Bender (also in the UWP) co-edited a collection on innovative writing assignments, and their textbook on evaluating and ethically using sources came out in 2020. Service to the university includes working extensively with the Campus Book Project. She also speaks at various ComicCons and at international conferences. Her cats loved that she taught from home during Covid, but they were terrible TAs.
