The University Writing Program promotes excellence in written communication among UC Davis students and faculty and emphasizes the importance of writing in the larger community. We help undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines to master the writing skills they need to succeed as academics, professionals, and citizens.
Our faculty of accomplished writers and researchers support the research mission of the university by
- conducting research on writing theory, practice, and pedagogy
- collaborating with faculty from all disciplines in writing-related research
- preparing PhD candidates for careers in research in rhetoric and composition studies.
We support the teaching mission of the University by
- offering diverse courses that meet the university's lower- and upper-division writing and writing experience requirements
- offering a Minor in Professional Writing open to all UC Davis majors
- training graduate student instructors and faculty from all disciplines to integrate writing more effectively into their courses
- providing workshops and individual consultations with faculty and graduate student instructors on writing
UWP faculty support the service mission of the University by
- promoting writing projects and writing internships throughout the community.
- publishing a nationally recognized journal on writing and the teaching of writing and publishing an annual anthology of prized student writing.
- offering public events that showcase outstanding student and professional writers.
- collaborating with K-12 educators and training undergraduate students to improve writing education at all levels
As a result of the work we do, UC Davis has been repeatedly ranked as one of the nation's premier universities for "Writing in the Disciplines" by US News & World Report.
