Bio

Biography:

Cynthia Bates, a long-time lecturer in the University Writing Program and director of the Entry Level Writing Program, earned her MA and BA degrees from UC Davis. She has taught a full range of courses at both the lower- and upper-division levels, including basic writing; freshman composition (for which she served as a mentor teacher); advanced composition; writing in the disciplines (fine arts); and writing in the professions (journalism, education, business writing), as well as the graduate course on the theory and practice of composition instruction. As an active creative writer, she has also taught UCD’s upper-division poetry workshops and published poetry in a number of literary journals and magazines. Bates' professional activities and accomplishments over the years include service as Assistant Chief Reader for the Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination and Chair of AWPE test development; membership on University Writing Program, Academic Federation, and Academic Senate committees; test development consultant to the National Writing Project; development of the UC Diagnostic Writing Service Pilot Project; Fellowship for the Area 3 Writing Project Summer Institute; and invitations to numerous writers' conferences and workshops. She has also received Undergraduate Instructional Improvement Program grants for curricular projects and conferences, as well as a grant for the Lilly Endowment Workshop on the Liberal Arts.
