Emily Alameida Awarded Competitive Technical Communication Scholarship

Emily Alameida, who is completing an Individual Major in Technical Communication through the University Writing Program, has been awarded the Dr. Kenneth M. Gordon Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Northern California Chapters of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). The scholarship includes a cash award and a complimentary student membership in the STC, the world's largest and oldest professional association dedicated to the advancement of the field of technical communication.

Scholarship applicants were judged based on achievement and career goals in the area of technical communication, letters of recommendation, course work in technical communication, and samples of technical communication work.

“Receiving this scholarship gives me more confidence that creating an individual major was the right choice for me. As a Technical Communication major, I have learned a lot about not just creating materials, but the mentality behind creating each document. Each user is different, so learning about the different components of conveying information to users, like concise writing and good visual design, was especially important."

Emily has recently accepted a job offer from IBM in San Jose. She will begin work as a full-time information developer after graduation in June 2016.

Emily currently works for the UC Davis Information and Education Technology Department as a Knowledge Analyst doing knowledge base writing and editing and Software Licensing work. She has also worked as a writing intern for the UC Davis Center for Design in the Public Interest.

UWP faculty advisor, Rebekka Andersen, had the following to say about Emily:

“Emily is the first student at UC Davis to major in Technical Communication, and I have been very impressed with her perseverance in getting the major approved and in proposing a curriculum that positions her well for a career in the field. It has been a true pleasure to work with Emily since she came to UC Davis, and I am thrilled that she was awarded the scholarship and that she will be joining the IBM Information Development Team, which has long been a global leader in defining best practices for information development and management.”
