The University Writing Program (UWP) in Voorhies Hall is dedicated to advancing excellence in written communication across the UC Davis community. The program serves undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines, supporting their development as skilled writers prepared to contribute meaningfully as scholars, professionals, and engaged citizens. UWP faculty contribute to the university’s research mission through scholarship in writing theory, practice, and pedagogy; interdisciplinary collaboration; and the preparation of PhD candidates for academic careers in rhetoric and composition.
In support of the university’s teaching mission, the program offers the Minor in Professional Writing, provides training for instructors seeking to integrate writing more effectively into their courses, and delivers a broad range of lower- and upper-division courses that fulfill writing requirements here at UC Davis. UWP also upholds the university’s service mission by fostering writing initiatives in the broader community, publishing a nationally recognized journal and an annual anthology of distinguished student writing, hosting public events showcasing exemplary writers, and collaborating with K–12 educators to strengthen writing education at all levels.
