Brad Henderson's UWP102E: Writing in the Disciplines (Engineering) is featured on the Global Affairs website. Brad's students are highlighted by Global Affairs for their projects working with global industries on communication related to using engineering to solve problems around the world.
Dr. Jane Beal published a new collection of poetry, Song of the Selkie (Aubade Publishing, 2020), and gave a poetry reading via the first Zoom version of the John Natsoulas Gallery Poetry Reading Series, hosted by Dr. Andy Jones. She also published a haiku micro-chap, In the Santa Cruz Mountains (Origami Poems, 2020), and Pearl: A Middle English Edition and Modern English Translation (Broadview, 2020).
Dana Ferris' co-authored article, “What Do Students Think about Their Own Writing? Insights for Teaching New College/University Writers," has been accepted for publication in the journal Writing and Pedagogy and will appear soon. Dana co-authored the article with two UWP alumni, Dr. Grant Eckstein and Dr. Katherina Sibbald.
Joseph Horton’s essay, “A Little Town,” about growing up in Littleton, Colorado and writing about school shootings, appears in the fall issue of PRISM international.
Daina Collins, Kelly Crosby, and Lisa Sperber participated in the 2020 Area 3 Writing Project Summer Institute and are now Teacher Leaders: members of a community of teachers who work within K-20 to collaborate and advocate for best practices in writing education. Lisa Sperber has been appointed Co-Director of the Area 3 Writing Project, working with Karen Smith.
Steve Thompson's third edited reference book on emerging tech, Machine Law, Ethics, and Morality in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, has been published by IGI Global. The book is a collection of innovative research that presents holistic and transdisciplinary approaches to the field of machine ethics and morality and offers up-to-date and state-of-the-art perspectives on the advancement of definitions, terms, policies, philosophies, and relevant determinants related to human-machine ethics.

Routledge has just published the new 4th edition of A Short History of Writing Instruction: From Ancient Greece to the Modern United States, co-edited by UWP emeritus professor Chris Thaiss and emeritus professor James J. Murphy, formerly of the English Department and the Department of Communication and Rhetoric. This is the fully updated and revised 30th Anniversary Edition of this classic of the field, with major new sections on 21st century advances in writing studies theory and pedagogy, plus an epilogue that forecasts future areas of needed inquiry.
Michael P. Montgomery, a fourth-year marine and coastal science major (oceans and the Earth system emphasis) minoring in professional writing and history, received first place in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences category of this year’s Norma J. Lang Prize. The prize, named after and funded by the late UC Davis Professor Emerita of Botany, Norma J. Lang, is for undergraduate students whose research projects make extensive use of library resources and advance their understanding of the academic research process.

UWP Director Dana Ferris and DE PhD student Amy Lombardi published the article "Collaborative Placement of Multilingual Writers: Combining Formal Assessment and Self-Evaluation" in volume 13.1 of The Journal of Writing Assessment. They examines the results of a collaborative placement study involving students in UWP EMS courses.
Lisa Klotz has won a 2020 Academic Federation Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. Lisa is the primary instructor for the UWP's course on writing for the legal profession. More about the 2020 Academic Senate and Federation teaching award winners can be found here.
