Writing Project Receives Grants to Improve Writing Instruction

May 2014

The Area 3 Writing Project (A3WP), located in REEd (Resourcing Excellence in Education) at the School of Education, has been awarded two grants from the National Writing Project.

The first grant for $20,000 over two years will expand and develop teacher leadership to improve the teaching of writing and learning in the nation’s schools. The goal of this funding is to provide new learning opportunities for a minimum of 20 teacher leaders  over the course of the grant. A3WP will use these funds to help fund its Invitational Summer Institute which builds capacity for teacher leadership in our region.

The second grant of $15,000 will support A3WP’s promotion of science, technology, and mathematics education, with a focus on writing science arguments. A3WP will be participating in a two-year leadership/research project comprised of six middle school teachers from San Juan Unified School District, Western Placer Unified School District, and Natomas Charter School.
