Biography:

Cynthia Bates has taught in the Composition Program at UCD since 1981 and has directed the Subject A program since 1983. Among the courses she has taught are English A (basic writing), UWP 1 (Freshman Composition) - for which she served as a mentor teacher - UWP 101 (advanced composition), UWP 104A (technical writing), 104D (writing in education), and UWP 390 (theory and practice of composition instruction). An additional area of specialization is creative writing; Ms. Bates recently taught English 100P and has published poetry in such journals as The South Dakota Review, Sing Heavenly Muse, and The California Quarterly. She also participates regularly in writers' conferences and in a local writers' group. Ms. Bates has served on numerous committees for the English Department, the Academic Federation, the Academic Senate, and the UC Office of the President, including the Universitywide Subject A Test Development Committee, which she chairs. Her conference presentations, teacher workshops, and panel discussions have focused on such topics as student preparation and the Subject A requirement/examination, developing multicultural curricula, and diagnostic testing and assessment.
