Prized Writing Student Author Reading & Discussion

On Thursday, April 17, 6:30-8:00 pm, a public reading and discussion on recent advances in medical research will be held in Room 126 Voorhies (1st & A) featuring UCD student authors whose work has been published in the 2006-2007 edition of Prized Writing. The essays, scientific papers, and technical reports in this annual anthology are selected by the faculty of the University Writing Program from hundreds of submitted papers. The contest and anthology promote scholarship and formal publication for undergraduate students. At the April 17 event, a few of these prize-winning students will read from and discuss their work, emphasizing how their processes of revising enabled them to produce excellent writing.

This reading is part of a series of events celebrating student writing which began Fall Quarter 2007 with an awards reception honoring the 20 students whose work appears in the anthology. Three other readings have been held so far—in November, January, and February. This final spring reading will conclude the student reading events related to the 2006-2007 volume.  The submission and reading of student work for the 2007-08 volume has also already begun.

This particular reading features papers in the medical sciences. All three presenters wrote scientific review articles which focused on some aspect of research on health and disease. Tariq Hashmi investigates ways in which “EPO,” a performance-enhancement drug, is being used to treat anemia in cancer patients. Shirley Rosenberg tackles the topic of detection and treatment of HER-2/neu breast cancer, and Pete Harris discusses Mild Cognitive Impairment and its controversial treatment and diagnoses. Each of these presentations offers a new approach on a controversial issue in medical research.

This reading is open to the public and refreshments will be available. Please join us in celebrating these students’ writing achievements! Books will be available for purchase and signing.
