On April 9, 2009, Dr. John Bitchener will give two presentations at UC Davis designed to improve graduate student writing.
A Fulbright Fellow and Professor of Applied Linguistics at AUT University, Auckland, New Zealand, Dr. Bitchener researches effective oral and written feedback to graduate student writers, both native speakers and English Language learners. He teaches graduate student writing courses on writing conference papers, theses, and dissertations. His most recent book is Researching Applied Linguistics: The Content and Structure of a Dissertation or Thesis (Palgrave Macmillan 2009).
Coaching Graduate Student Writers: Best Practices in Responding to Writing: A Roundtable for Faculty

Dr. John Bitchener will explain how the different parts of a thesis/dissertation function and how an understanding of functions informs both the content and structure of the sections. He will explain how to use genre analysis in any discipline to clarify expectations and illustrate with examples from a well-crafted thesis in Applied Linguistics.
