About UWP

The University Writing Program is an independent unit in the College of Letters and Science. We serve student writers in all majors: through lower-division courses in composition, an array of upper-division writing courses in the disciplines and professions, and graduate courses and graduate writing workshops. The Director of the UWP is Christopher Thaiss.

UWP courses meet the lower- and upper-division composition requirements for all undergraduates. In addition, undergraduate students from any discipline may qualify for the 20-credit Writing Minor.

At the doctoral level, the UWP offers an interdisciplinary Designated Emphasis in Writing, Rhetoric, and Composition Studies, in co-operation with several other departments.

For faculty in all subject areas, the UWP Workshop Program in Writing Across the Curriculum offers training and consultation in the effective uses of writing in teaching.

Formerly part of the English Department, the UWP became independent in 2005 and a tenure home for Academic Senate faculty in 2007. For more information related to this process of reorganization (2001-05), please read our program history.
